Carmen Sanchez
Single, 34 years old

Carmen was born in a small town in Oaxaca, Mexico’s second poorest state, on July 22, 1975 into a low-income family of five.

While her parents worked on the land, all little Carmen wanted to do was to play with her dolls’ hair.  She waited anxiously to finish middle school so she could enroll in a hairstylist academy.  After finishing her hairstyling courses, she began offering her services to family, friends, and neighbors in her hometown.

To continue developing her career further, and to help her struggling family, Carmen moved to Mexico City at the age of 19.  Here she continued to take stylist courses and began
working at the barbershop of a major department store.  After working in several

different cities in Mexico for over six years, Carmen decided to set up her own shop in Toluca, an industrial city an hour west of Mexico City.

As her family’s main breadwinner, Carmen has come a long way from her humble roots in Oaxaca and is excited about the possibilities available to her in Spain.  She is not only attracted by the significantly higher income, but also by the opportunity to continue developing her skills as a top hairstylist.  She has heard much about Spanish fashion and lifestyle, and is eager to learn from a new culture.  Carmen is bound to serve many happy customers as a Puentes Associate in Spain, while surely continuing to grow professionally and personally in her new life path.

One of the economic benefits of immigration is that the diversity of the population is enhanced. Diversity, it is argued, enriches the environment in which individuals live and trade and may contribute to greater creativity…To the extent that there are gains from diversity, they come through the interaction of individuals from one culture or background with individuals from another. A good partner in the interaction has different skills, has skills that are relevant to one’s own activity, and is a person with whom one can communicate.
